Undergraduate Academic Affairs (UAA), a unit within the Office of the Provost, enhances the experience of UW undergraduates. Within UAA, First Year Programs (FYP) oversees the entry and transition of approximately 9,200 new students and 3,800 family members annually. Key FYP programs include Advising & Orientation, Family Orientation, Dawg Daze, First-Year Interest Groups, First-Year Networks, and the Commuter & Transfer Commons. 

Advising & Orientation (A&O) Student Coordinators (StuCos) are part of a collaborative team that supports the planning and delivery of A&O programs. They work closely with professional and student staff to ensure a smooth transition for incoming students. 

StuCos serve as paraprofessionals, leading A&O programming and managing the recruitment, training and supervision of Virtual Orientation Leaders. They also help with other programs as needed, providing high-quality support to first-year (U.S. and international) and transfer students.

Overview

Hourly wage: $20.76 (effective January 1, 2025)

Start/end date: Oct. 2. 2025–Oct. 2026 

Student Employees cannot work more than 19.5 hours per week while classes are in session, including finals week, but can work up to 39.5 hours during breaks in winter and spring as agreed upon by your supervisor. 

Hours available: 
Autumn quarter: 10–15/week 
Winter quarter: 12–17/week 
Spring quarter: 12–17/week 
Summer: 35–39.5/week  
Beginning of Autumn quarter: 3–5/week (cross-training)

Leave time (including vacation and sick time) may impact hours worked each week.

This position is an in-person position in MGH 120 with occasional work from home opportunities if needed and as agreed upon by your supervisor

Summary of work 

The StuCo for A&O Program will: 

Administrative work (40%)

  • Coordinate and support VOL Staffing, VOL Training, Daily Briefs, and Communication for all Quarterly A&O Programs (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer Admits). 
  • Staff Winter and Spring A&O Sessions (fyp.uw.edu/calendar for dates)
  • Support in the selection of the Virtual Orientation Leader team including recruitment info sessions, application review, interview support, and the selection process. 
  • Serve as a back-up VOL for A&O Part 2 and 3 if short staffed. 
  • Create a VOL staff development & engagement calendar for the summer quarter (ie-debrief reflection questions, mid-summer evals, husky pups, campus-partner thank you, etc.) 
  • Utilize and build technical and administrative skills/tasks within Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Zoom, Visual Zen, and other internal UW databases/ systems 
  • Prepare presentations and present at various public events including at FYP info sessions, etc. 
  • Cross-train incoming A&O Student Coordinators during Autumn Quarter following the A&O summer. 
  • Other FYP duties as assigned include but not limited to: reviewing websites and providing feedback, processing evaluation data, representing FYP at UW wide events.
  • Help develop the Connection Group VOL track for all A&O programs.
  • Manage the uwao@uw.edu.

Student Staff Support (30%)

  • Primary support for the Virtual Orientation Leader training team in developing and carrying out the VOL Training Curriculum (class and training).
  • Give feedback to the Program Manager on training assignments.
  •  Facilitate training material and work with students who missed training material to catch up. 
  • Track participation, grade and manage assignments, and overall communicate with VOLs and Husky Ambassadors. 
  • Collaborate with the Student Coordinator for A&O Logistics and Systems to support campus partners and Virtual Orientation Leaders during A&O programming and Issues Chats.

Program Support (20%)

  • Support and assist the StuCo for A&O logistics in their tasks and projects.
  • Holding office hours on Sunday during the A&O program to support VOLs (1-2 hours).
  • Support Husky Ambassador Training for A&O Part 3 
  • Facilitate 1:1 make up sessions for students who need accommodations during Winter and Spring A&O.  

Recruitment (5%)

  • Support in the selection of the Virtual Orientation Leader team, including recruitment info sessions, application review, interview support, and the selection process. 
  • Participate in application reading for First-year Interest Group Leaders.

Other (5%)

  • Support the planning and delivery of all programs in FYP in line with the functions of these roles and the StuCos’ developmental interests.
  • Other FYP duties: Including but not limited to providing feedback on documents, presenting during student trainings, and supporting live Zoom rooms.

Required qualifications

  • Full-time, degree-seeking, undergraduate student at the University of Washington in Seattle.
  • Experience working as a Virtual Orientation Leader. 
  • Good academic and conduct standing prior to and throughout the entire term of employment. This includes a GPA of 2.5 or above.
