Add Code 101

Find out if you need an add code and how to get one.

Add codes, also known as entry codes, are used to register for restricted course sections. For example, PSYCH 499 is restricted for psychology majors only. PSYCH 499 uses add codes to save space for psychology students by preventing non-psychology majors from signing up. Add codes are used for multiple reasons, and you can learn more by visiting the Office of the University Registrar course fundamentals website.

Navigating add codes involves multiple steps. Open your course in MyPlan and follow the guide below to see if you need an add code for your class.

Add Code Guide

1. The class/quiz section has a key icon in MyPlan

  • If yes, the course requires an add code. Continue to step 2.
  • If no, you do not need an add code

2. Select "View More Details"

Does it say the class is reserved for a FIG or cluster registration?

  • If yes, you don’t need an add code. You can register for the FIG using the SLN code. If you want to take a class but don’t want to be a part of the FIG, request a seat at fyp.uw.edu/extraseats.
  • If no, you might need an add code. Are there instructions under “view more details” about who to contact for add codes?
    • If yes, you do need an add code. Follow the instructions on MyPlan about who to contact. If there isn't an email listed, contact the professor or the department.
    • If no, you might need an add code. Continue to step 3.

3. Course restrictions

Does the course description say the class is restricted for reasons other than requiring an add code? (i.e. section closed, staffing, etc.)

  • If yes, you don’t need an add code. If a class is closed, sign up for NotifyUW. Departments may be restricting sections for various reasons, and are not giving out add codes. For more information, contacts the department that is offering the class.
  • If no, you do need an add code. Follow the instructions on MyPlan about who to contact. If there isn't an email listed, contact the professor or the department
